ModeGuard is a Windows application made by Silent Key Technologies. It reads keyboard input in order to do its job. That is a serious thing for an app to do, so this policy leads with exactly what happens to those keystrokes rather than burying it.
1. Keystrokes
Your keystrokes are processed locally and never leave your device. ModeGuard installs a low level Windows keyboard hook to determine the state your machine is in: which keyboard layout is active, whether Caps Lock is on, and which modifier keys are held.
- Not stored. Key events are handled in memory and discarded. Nothing is written to disk, and no typing history or log file is created.
- Not transmitted. ModeGuard has no server, no account system and no telemetry that carries input. There is nowhere for your keystrokes to be sent.
- The hook detects state, it does not record input. This is the difference between ModeGuard and a keylogger, and it is enforced by the app having no storage and no network path for that data.
- The rescue buffer is the single exception. To rewrite a line typed in the wrong keyboard layout, ModeGuard holds the most recent characters you typed in memory. That buffer is capped in length, exists only in RAM, is cleared when you use the rescue or move to another window, and is gone when the app closes.
- Password fields. ModeGuard cannot intercept input inside elevated or higher integrity windows, which covers Windows credential prompts. The rescue buffer is not retained across application focus changes.
2. What is stored on your device
ModeGuard writes a single configuration file to your local Windows user profile. It contains your key bindings, per application profiles, chosen theme and app preferences. It contains no typed content. It stays on your machine, is not synced, and is removed when you uninstall the app.
3. What we collect
From the app: nothing. ModeGuard does not phone home. There is no analytics SDK, no crash reporter that transmits automatically, and no usage tracking inside the application.
From this website: Google Analytics, which records anonymised page views and general traffic sources so we know whether anyone is reading this. It does not identify you personally.
If you give us your email: we store the address you type into the form on this site, in order to send you the test build and a message when the app launches. We do not sell it, rent it, or pass it to anyone. Ask us at any time and we will delete it.
4. Purchases
If you buy a Pro or Team licence, the payment is processed by Lemon Squeezy, who act as merchant of record. Your card details are handled by them and are never seen by, or transmitted to, Silent Key Technologies. We receive your email address and the fact that a licence was issued, so that we can support it. Lemon Squeezy's own privacy policy governs the payment data they hold.
If you install through the Microsoft Store, Microsoft handles that transaction under their terms and shares only aggregate, non identifying information with us.
5. Children
ModeGuard is a productivity utility and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from them.
6. Your rights
Because the app collects nothing, there is usually nothing for us to hand over or erase. Where we do hold something, which in practice means an email address you gave us or a licence record, you can ask us to show it to you, correct it, or delete it. Write to the address below and we will action it.
7. Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects how the app treats your input, we will say so on this page and change the date at the top. We will not quietly widen what the app collects.
